England Athletics West Midlands Regional Volunteers Awards

We hope you are all keeping safe and well in the current unusual climate.

We have good news in that a couple of our very own have achieved awards in the England Athletics West Midlands Regional Volunteers Awards.

MMAC Chair, Graham Lamb of Burton AC, won the Run Leader of the Year category for his work with a young distance running group he built up from scratch – five girls from which were selected to represent their county at the English School Championships or Inter Counties. Undeterred by lockdown, Graham conducted online Zoom coaching sessions and encouraged the group to create Stava art.

Sam Cater, of Bromsgrove & Redditch AC, won Coach of the Year with his coaching work since passing Level 1, followed up by a throws coach award, at the age of 19. Sam is a kind and attentive coach and in addition to coaching veteran athletes who have succeeded well within their age groups, he has coached many promising young athletes, such as Lewis Byng diagnosed with autism and Tourretes syndrome, who has gone on to represent England and Great Britain at the age of 17.

MMAC Virtual Grand Prix 2020

We now have the final results for the Midland Masters Virtual Grand prix 2020.

Thank you all for taking part and huge congratulations to our winners:

Tracey Hinxman F45 who, from an incredible 112 participants, won with 965 points. Mark Couldwell M45 came 2nd with 946 points with Matthew Blunden M40 placed 3rd with 910 points closely followed by runners up Scott Green M40 and Ian Salt M40.

MMAC Virtual Grand Prix

I hope you are all keeping safe and well out there. The MMAC Grand Prix is now into its third month and this month’s virtual races are the Strava 5k and 10k challenges – you will need to connect to the MMAC club on Strava – be careful as there are two if you search but only one of them is obviously Midland Masters AC and you will see our logo.

From an incredible 96 participants, Mark Couldwell M45 is in the lead with 385 points, Tracey Hinxman F45 is 2nd on 383 points and in 3rd place is Matt Blunden M40 with 379 points.

Message from MMAC Chairman

t will come as little surprise that after careful consideration and following Government and EA guidelines regarding the Covid-19 outbreak we are making these changes to our program.

The MMAC AGM scheduled for 25th April at Rosliston Forestry Centre is cancelled. We are investigating the option of a voice conference instead, if we proceed with this we will send out details shortly.

BMAF have already announced the Road Relays at Sutton Park on 16th May at Sutton Park are cancelled. We had originally hoped to have a Midland’s race inside that event.

We are cancelling the MMAC Track and Field Championships on the 14th June at Nuneaton. We will not hold a standalone event this year, we will investigate other options when track restrictions are removed.

We have not yet heard about the status of the Outdoors Inter areas or the BMAF Outdoor T&F Championships.

The committee will continue to meet by Voice Conference so that we can be prepared for a restart when possible.

We will look to keep producing a newsletter with interesting articles and detail of the recent MMAC indoors domination. If you would like to submit any articles that would be welcome.

One thing to look forward to next year, 2021, we will be celebrating 50 years since the MMAC was formed.  We hope that we can celebrate our sport and this milestone together.

Colin Simpson Memorial Handicap 2020

Ron Cattle, of Midland Masters, ran away with the Colin Simpson trophy this year in an actual time of 33:20 and a handicap time of 23:30 (photo below) while Pete Makepeace, of Knowle & Dorridge AC (not currently an MMAC member) won the handicap race overall in an actual time of 33:47 and a handicap time of 21:57 Steven Bunsby, of BRAT, took the fastest male prize with a superb time of 28:18 while Sue Kneill-Boxley, of Cannock & Stafford AC, took the fastest female prize in a respectable time of 36:52. Eight MMAC members took part in the event, 2nd and 3rd placed MMAC members in the handicap were Christopher McCann and Eric Robathan with actual times of 33:44 and 38:07 and handicap times of 23:04 and 23:27 respectively. Please do join us at this event, in forthcoming years if you can, it is a friendly sociable event well worth supporting in the MMAC calendar. There are excellent facilities at the college and refreshments served in the presentation area.

Just a reminder that the closing date to enter the Colin Simpson Handicap run is this Friday, 24th January. Please enter if you can, this is a very friendly & sociable event over a pleasant course with prizes for the handicap winner, fastest actual male and female times and three fastest handicap times.

The race isincorporated within Centurion Grand Prix Series. To be held at John Henry Newman Catholic College, Chelmsley Wood, B37 5GA.
