It is with sadness we record the passing of our oldest active female athlete on 21st December. Mary Wixey would have been 97 this month. Mary’s funeral will take place at 11am on Tuesday 23rd at St.Gregory the Great Church, St.James’ Square, Cheltenham GL50 3PR. All are welcome at the church. Followed by cremation at Cheltenham Crematorium attended by family and close friends only. Donations in Mary’s memory can be made to Alzheimers Research UK and sent c/o Mason & Stokes Funeral Services, Tudor Lodge, 54 Hewlett Road, Cheltenham GL52.
When Mary retired from teaching she took up a second career competing in athletics around the world. In 1996, aged 74 she could jump further in both the long jump and the triple jump than anyone in the world of her age. Aged 85, competing in the European and World Vet Championships. Aged 91, carrying the Olympic torch in Cheltenham – her proudest moment. She returned from World Masters Athletics Championships in Finland in 2012 having won 5 silver medals for 60m spring, discus, shot put, javelin and long jump.

Message from Bridget Cushen of British Masters:
Hi All. The long awaited Documentary from Selah Hennessy on the late Charles Eugster is scheduled for screening at 20.00 on BBC2 Thursday 24th, title The Pacemakers. She has been filming him and our other 80-plus sprinters for some time. I hope the Documentary does not disappoint. She has gone to a lot of personal expense. It should feature some of our other sprinters.
